Keris Myrick Presents “A Journey from Stigma to Hope: Sticking it to Stigma” at NAMI Vermont 2014 Annual Conference

The main objective of the keynote is to provide the audience with an understanding of the impact of stigma and resulting prejudice and discrimination that affects people living with mental illness and their loved ones. “When stigma shows up, ‘Talk to the hand!’ Be irreverent and provocative to move from demeaned to esteemed, from patient-hood to person and from what’s wrong to what’s strong! Keris Myrick will share the impact of stigma on the person, family, organization and community as she weaves the audience through her personal journey of overcoming the impact of stigma in her journey of recovery.

Keris Jän Myrick Biography:

Keris Jän Myrick is a leading mental health advocate and non-profit executive, known for her innovative and inclusive approach to mental health reform and the public disclosure of her personal story. Ms. Myrick is currently President and CEO of Project Return Peer Support Network, a Los Angeles-based, peer-run nonprofit, which manages over 100 self-help groups in Los Angeles County, a peer-staffed Warm Line, a Spanish language community resource center (El Centrito de Apoyo), and three levels of Peer Advocate training. She is the President of National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and is a consultant to the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Office of Minority and National Affairs (OMNA). She is an advisor providing assistance with the psychiatry component of the Recovery to Practice project, a SAMSHA-funded collaboration between APA and the American Association of Community Psychiatrists (AACP).

Ms. Myrick has recently been featured in the CalMHSA documentary “A New State of Minde: Ending the Stigma of Mental Illness” and her personal story was featured in the New York Times series: “Lives Restored,” which told the personal narratives of several successful professionals living with mental health issues. Ms. Myrick’s belief is an in-demand national trainer and keynote speaker. She is known for her collaborative style and innovative “whole person” approach to mental health care.
Ms. Myrick has a Master of Science degree in organizational psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology of Alliant International University. Her Master of Business Administration degree, with an emphasis on marketing, is from Case Western Reserve University. She is currently a doctoral candidate with an emphasis area in Industrial-Organizational Psychology.
