Thank you to everyone who attended Mental Health Advocacy Day on Wednesday! Over 200 people joined the event. and 57 co-sponsoring organizations. We heard remarks from state leaders, testimonies throughout the day, and powerful personal stories from individuals affected by mental illness. It was a truly impactful event, and we thank all who were involved.
Mental Health Advocacy Awards
The Lifetime Achievement Award was proudly presented to Jane Kitchel, a retired Senator from Danville, in recognition of her exceptional leadership, unwavering commitment, and tireless advocacy for individuals seeking support. Throughout her distinguished career, Senator Kitchel has been a beacon of hope and a powerful voice for those in need. Her dedication has left an indelible mark on Vermont, and her legacy of service continues to inspire future generations of leaders and advocates.
Representative Brian Cina of Burlington, a dedicated member of the House Committee on Health Care, was honored with the Unsung Hero Award for his remarkable leadership and steadfast advocacy on behalf of Vermonters. Known for his compassionate service and tireless efforts, Representative Cina has worked tirelessly to advance policies that promote the health and well-being of all members of Vermont. His deep commitment to ensuring equitable access to care and his ongoing support for the most vulnerable reflect a true dedication to the spirit of service and compassion.
Cathie Buscaglia has been honored with the Excellence in Leadership Award for her outstanding contributions to the mental health community. As the Director of Innovation and Special Projects at Howard Center, Cathie has led groundbreaking initiatives aimed at improving the lives of individuals facing mental health challenges. Recently, she played a pivotal role in establishing a safe and supportive home environment for 16 individuals with complex needs, ensuring they receive the care and stability they deserve. Additionally, she helped spearhead the opening of the Mental Health Urgent Care in Burlington, a vital resource that provides a therapeutic alternative to emergency department visits. This initiative serves as a lifeline for individuals experiencing self-defined mental health crises, including those in suicidal distress, with co-occurring medical conditions, or in need of immediate peer support. Cathie’s passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to mental health advocacy have made a lasting impact on the community. Through her leadership, she continues to drive innovative solutions that enhance the quality of life for all people in our community. “This award isn’t just about me – it’s about the amazing teams, colleagues, and partners I’ve had the privilege to work with. Together, we’ve worked to create spaces where people feel safe to advocate for their mental health and embrace their unique journeys.” said Cathie Buscaglia.
Kate Cappleman Sinz was awarded the Advocate of the Year Award for her exceptional contributions to complex care coordination for pediatric patients and their families. As a Social Work Care Manager at UVM Children’s Hospital Pediatric Primary Care, Kate collaborates closely with primary care pediatricians to identify and assess patients who require intricate care coordination. Her efforts ensure that every child and family receives the support they need to thrive.
Jamie Moore was awarded the Rising Star Award for his exceptional contributions to mental health support as the athletic director at Bellcate School. Bellcate School is a Vermont State-approved independent therapeutic school serving youth with high support needs. As an early-career professional, Jamie has consistently demonstrated unwavering passion, commitment, and dedication to improving the lives of individuals who often feel marginalized, disenfranchised, or disconnected from mainstream support systems.
