Mental Illness and Recovery Workshop – St. Johnsbury – Limited Seating Available!

Mental Illness and Recovery Feature ImageThere is still time to register for the “Introduction to Mental Illness and Recovery” workshop in St. Johnsbury on November 16th from 9 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Family members, peers and community residents who want to learn more about mental illness and recovery should attend this workshop. This new one-day workshop will be offered in northern, central, and southern Vermont three times a year. Each workshop is taught by two trained volunteer teachers who are long-time NAMI Vermont members. Participants will learn information about mental illness, recovery, crisis prevention, and accessing other available resources and programs throughout the state. Our first workshop was hosted at the VA Medical Center in White River Junction in October and was very well attended. The St. Albans workshops is full, however we are still accepting registrations for the St. Johnsbury workshop.

Attend this one-day workshop where you will learn about:

  • Some basic facts about the incidence of mental illnesses worldwide;
  • How families and peers cope, including some of the emotional reactions people often have when they or someone they love has a mental illness;
  • How mental health professionals diagnose mental illness;
  • Diagnostic criteria for 7 illnesses, including bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, borderline personality disorder, and dual diagnosis, that is the combination of a mental illness and substance abuse;
  • Evidence based practices for treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder and Dual Diagnosis;
  • The power of lack of insight and stigma to prevent people from getting the help they need;
  • Components of recovery, including what recovery is and isn’t, and some definitions of what recovery means;
  • Services available in Vermont, including the Evidence Based  Practices for treating illnesses, Wellness Management and Recovery, Medication Management, and Supported Employment;
  • Specific suggestions on how people can cope with mental illness, especially when there is a lack insight;
  • Practical advice from NAMI families about how to handle a variety of situations, including how to prevent a crisis;
  • Exercise: Problem solving using you’re a specific problem from among workshop participants;
  • Some suggested next steps that you may find helpful; and
  • The Principles of Support that we use in our NAMI support groups
