Gain insight and understanding and feel more empowered to cope with mental illness.

Attend this one-day workshop where you will learn about:

  • Some basic facts about the incidence of mental illnesses worldwide;
  • How families and peers cope, including some of the emotional reactions people often have when they or someone they love has a mental illness;
  • How mental health professionals diagnose mental illness;
  • Diagnostic criteria for 7 illnesses, including bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, borderline personality disorder, and dual diagnosis, that is the combination of a mental illness and substance abuse;
  • Evidence based practices for treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder and Dual Diagnosis;
  • The power of lack of insight and stigma to prevent people from getting the help they need;
  • Components of recovery, including what recovery is and isn’t, and some definitions of what recovery means;
  • Services available in Vermont, including the Evidence Based  Practices for treating illnesses, Wellness Management and Recovery, Medication Management, and Supported Employment;
  • Specific suggestions on how people can cope with mental illness, especially when there is a lack insight;
  • Practical advice from NAMI families about how to handle a variety of situations, including how to prevent a crisis;
  • Problem solving exercise using a specific problem from participants;
  • Some suggested next steps that you may find helpful; and
  • The Principles of Support that we use in our NAMI support groups.
